The new guidance includes four standards for providers to follow, including conducting screenings, obtaining diagnostic imaging, making the correct diagnosis and beginning the least invasive, evidence-based nonsurgical or surgical treatment.
The guidance was written by members of the AAOMS Special Committee on Temporomandibular Joint Care and published in the June issue of the Journal of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
