ADA Concerns Over Federal Funding Pause for Oral Health Programs

The American Dental Association (ADA) is raising concerns about a recent directive from the Trump administration to pause certain federal financial assistance programs, creating uncertainty for oral health initiatives. The pause, issued by the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), impacts funding for vital programs from the National Institutes of Health (NIH), the Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

In a letter on January 28, ADA leaders warned that the funding freeze could disrupt grants for dental research, public health programs, and preventive care. Key programs at risk include NIH’s National Institute of Dental and Craniofacial Research, HRSA’s oral health initiatives, and CDC’s efforts to expand fluoridation and access to dental care.

The ADA also noted that the pause affects areas indirectly linked to oral health, such as public health infrastructure and workforce development programs. The association is calling for Congress to seek clarification and expedite the approval of oral health-related grants.

On January 29, the OMB rescinded its memo after widespread confusion, and a federal judge temporarily blocked the funding freeze through February 3. The ADA is continuing to monitor the situation and advocate for oral health priorities.
