ADA Seeks Experts to Update Standards for Dental Laboratories and Products

The American Dental Association (ADA) is inviting experts to join working groups developing new dental standards. These groups include volunteers from dental practice, industry, academia, and government.

Key proposed standards under revision include:

ANSI/ADA 39: Pit and fissure sealants, covering self-curing and energy-activated polymer materials. Updates will align with ISO 6874:2015.

ANSI/ADA 41: Biocompatibility testing of dental medical devices, aligned with ISO 7405:2025.

ANSI/ADA 78: Endodontic obturating materials, including size, radiopacity, labeling, and melt-flow testing, adopting ISO 6877:2025.

ANSI/ADA 120: Physical properties of powered toothbrushes, addressing safety, design, and motion features, aligned with ISO 20127:2025.

ANSI/ADA 157: Powered dental scaler handpieces and tips, including ultrasonic types, adopting ISO 18397:2025.

ANSI/ADA 166: Accuracy standards for CAD/CAM digital dentures.

ANSI/ADA 196-2: Polymers for dental instruments, adopting ISO 21850-2:2025.

ANSI/ADA 223: Corrosion resistance of dental amalgam, adopting ISO 23325:2020.

ANSI/ADA 224: Radiopacity testing methods for dental materials.

ANSI/ADA 1054 & 1075: Standardized electronic dental and orthodontic lab prescriptions.

ANSI/ADA 1120-5 & 1120-6: Data standards for prior authorizations, predeterminations, and benefit explanations.

ANSI/ADA 1121: AI and augmented intelligence for 2D radiograph analysis, aligned with ISO 18374:2025.

The ADA, an ANSI-accredited standards developer since 1928, emphasizes that these updates ensure safe, effective, and interoperable dental products and technologies.
