ADA to explore options for diabetes education for dentists

The American Dental Association is exploring options to educate dentists on the oral health implications of Type 1 diabetes.

The move comes in response to a resolution brought to the ADA’s House of Delegates in October, according to a Jan. 14 news release. This resolution called for the ADA to recognize children and adolescents with Type 1 diabetes as a high-risk group.

Although the House of Delegates did not pass the resolution, it did refer it to the ADA’s Council on Advocacy for Access and Prevention for further study. A report will be given to the 2026 House of Delegates in October.

The advocacy council is reviewing patient education materials on Type 1 diabetes and is working with the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs to develop an educational tool for dental professionals.
