Another Powys Dental Practice Set for Permanent Closure

Mydentist in Knighton has announced it will close permanently at the end of next month.

Patients received a letter confirming that the surgery will stop providing dental services from Tuesday, 30 September. The practice, located at Wyclwm Place, has struggled to recruit the dentists needed to remain open.

In a statement, Mydentist said:

“The decision to close the practice has not been taken lightly. For some time, we have tried to recruit more clinicians, but we have not been able to secure the dentists needed to keep the practice running. As such, we have no option but to close.”

This follows the recent closure of another NHS Mydentist in Crickhowell, reducing dental care options across Mid Wales.

James Evans, MS for Brecon & Radnorshire, called the closure “a huge blow” for the area. He said, “NHS dentistry is already limited across Mid Wales. People are being forced to travel further to see a dentist, and waiting lists continue to grow. This is completely unacceptable.”

Evans criticized both the Welsh and UK governments for the crisis. “The collapse of NHS dentistry is a direct result of government failures. The Welsh Government has not provided adequate funding or proper pay increases, while the UK Government’s unfunded National Insurance and National Living Wage hikes have created severe financial pressure.

Practices are struggling with inflation and tax rises, making it impossible to deliver NHS care. This is why we are seeing a record number of contracts being handed back. Urgent action is needed to protect our communities.”

He added that patients are increasingly left without access to care, with some resorting to DIY dentistry. Evans also questioned whether Welsh Labour’s planned dental reforms in 2026 will address the growing problem, noting that the British Dental Association has criticized the Welsh Government for its limited public engagement on reforms.

Powys Teaching Health Board (PTHB) acknowledged the closure, saying: “We understand that this news is frustrating and concerning for residents of Knighton and surrounding areas. We are actively exploring options for future dental services in the area.”
