AAPD foundation accepts grant applications

The Foundation of the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry (AAPD) is now accepting grant applications for its 2016 Healthy Smiles, Healthy Children program. The grants support community-based initiatives throughout the U.S. that provide dental care to children whose families cannot afford care. Each awardee is given a one-year matching grant of up to $20,000. The deadline to apply is August 3, 2015.

Aspen Dental to offer free care for veterans

More than 300 Aspen Dental branded practices in 31 states will offer free dental care to veterans on Saturday, June 27. Participating dentists and other volunteers will provide free services including fillings, extractions, and basic denture repair. The Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute’s Pipeline to Proposal program has given a clinical research award to an otolaryngologist with Henry Ford Hospital in Detroit to study treatment options and post-treatment rehabilitation for oropharyngeal cancer patients. Steven Chang, MD, a surgeon in the department of otolaryngology and head and neck surgery at the hospital, will focus on improving quality-of-life issues for long-term survivors of oropharyngeal cancer, according to a press release.

America’s ToothFairy announces leadership award winners

Five high school students were named as winners of the 2015 Oral Health Youth Leadership Awards. The awards are given by America’s ToothFairy: National Children’s Oral Health Foundation. The Alabama Supreme Court upheld a state law restricting nondentists from offering teeth-whitening products and services.
