Flying a kite is an experience that everyone should have. Going to the park on a windy day to have fun either alone or with your family and friends cannot be replaced by any modern gadget. Playing with a kite represents one of the richest and healthiest methods of entertainment possible. So now imagine how great it would be to build your own.
Kites are classic childhood toys for a lot of people, but there are many kids that have never had the opportunity to play with one. We invite you to bring this lovely tradition to those who don’t know it yet. So here are 5 simple steps to make a kite with your own hands and enjoy it with your loved ones or on your own.
Step 1: Get the Material
What you’ll need:
- A big plastic bag.
- Insulation tape.
- Two sticks ¼” about 36 inches long.
- Scissors.
- String, both for flying and building the kite.
- A marker.
Step 2: Making the Body
Take the plastic bag and mark 3 dots as shown in the picture. It will be the size of your kite. Connect the dots with the marker taking care of making straight lines. Take your scissors and carefully cut along the lines. And as in the picture below, you’ll have a kite in form of a diamond almost ready to fly.
Step 3: Adding the Skeleton
Take one of the sticks and put it along the vertical line in the middle of your kite. With the knife, cut the stick so it can fit perfectly. Cut off a little piece of insulation tape and use it to tie the stick with the plastic. Do this just in the edge of the plastic as seen in the image below.
Repeat this process with the other stick putting it in the horizontal line. Now take the knife and poke a small hole in the plastic where the sticks cross. Cut a piece of string and use it to tie together the sticks passing the free end of the string through the hole (See the picture below). And now you’ll have a kite with body and bones.
Step 4: Attaching the Soul
Your kite is almost complete, now you just need to add the things that will make it fly. Take a long piece of string (really, really long) and tie it to the center of your kite, where the sticks cross. Be sure the knot is strong, you don’t want your kite to fly away on its own. With the remaining pieces of the plastic bag, cut a strip about twice as long as your kite. It will be the tail. Tie it to the bottom of the longer stick, just above where it is taped to the plastic.
Step 5: Make your Kite Fly!
Now the only thing you need is a perfectly windy day to enjoy your kite.
