The Celebration’s Background
Celebrations associate to giving thanks to God, deities or other have been celebrated for thousands of years. Before the settlement of the Europeans, native Canadians held ceremonies and festivals to celebrate the conclusion and generosity the harvest had offered. When Europeans began to settle in Canada; they held the thanksgiving celebration, to give thanks for some special fortune achieved that year.

A few years after the US Civil War began, many American refugees fleeing the war went to Canada and brought with them the custom of an annual thanksgiving festival. This made Thanksgiving Day, to be held annually; but every year the date varied and a special theme was made each year. Since the end of the WWI until 1930, holidays like Armistice Day and Thanksgiving Day were celebrated on the Monday closest to November 11 to commemorate the end of WWI. However, this changed in 1931 when Thanksgiving Day was moved to a Monday in October and in 1957 another change occurred, Canada’s Thanksgiving Day will now be held on the second Monday in October.
