CDA Foundation Launches Wellness Grant for Dental Students to Support Oral Health and Well-Being

Recognizing that provider well-being directly impacts oral health, the CDA Foundation has introduced a Wellness Grant to support student-led events at California dental schools. Applications are now open.

Stress often begins in dental school and can persist throughout a dentist’s career, contributing to higher rates of burnout, anxiety, and depression. While students develop coping strategies, institutional support is critical to promoting long-term mental health and professional resilience.

The new grant, reflecting the Foundation’s commitment to sustainable professional development, offers up to $300 per school each academic year. Funds are available for student-initiated events that focus on wellness education, skill-building, or integration into long-term practices.

Eligible events include:

Wellness-focused C.E. courses, lunch & learns, or workshops addressing burnout prevention, ergonomics, or stress management.

Sponsored webinar watch parties with refreshments that remove barriers like time constraints or lack of food.

Peer wellness ambassador training programs that create a sustainable culture of wellness and leadership among students.

Events centered on entertainment, recreation, or giveaways are not eligible, as they do not align with the program’s educational and sustained wellness objectives.

California dental students can apply online by submitting a brief proposal describing the event, its connection to professional development, its long-term impact, and potential integration with existing curriculum or student life. Partnerships with school departments to enhance the event are encouraged.

Grants are awarded on a rolling basis and will close once all available funds have been allocated. Students are urged to submit proposals that foster peer support and lasting wellness strategies.
