Thirty-three million Americans are afflicted by diabetes mellitus, with 7.2 million cases undiagnosed. With the increasing diabetes epidemic, it is estimated that by the year 2050 one in three Americans will be diabetic in their lifetime. Diabetic patients are 2-3 times more likely to develop periodontal disease than non-diabetics. A total of 80% of diabetics reside in the middle and lower socioeconomic level of American society, and dental clinicians have the ability to make a difference in the lives of these individuals. In 2020 there have been new CDT codes implemented to aid dental care workers to identify and help manage the oral systemic link of diabetes.
