Worldwide, an estimated 390 million people have diabetes – and that number keeps growing. This patient population has specialized needs when it comes to periodontal care. Treating diabetic patients is different than nondiabetic patients. This CE webinar provides cut-to-the-chase explanations about the interrelationship between diabetes and periodontal disease and information to empower oral healthcare providers to screen dental patients for diabetes and prediabetes, articulate scientifically-founded, key messages for patient education about this interrelationship, and better understand how poor glycemic control in a diabetic patient should influence treatment planning. This CE webinar is a must for clinicians who are still treating patients who have diabetes the same way they treat patients without diabetes.
After completing this CE webinar, participants will be able to:
• Explain to patients how diabetes and periodontal disease are interrelated.
• Articulate key, scientifically-founded messages about diabetes and periodontal disease in educating diabetic and prediabetic patients.
• Screen dental patients for diabetes and prediabetes and make appropriate referrals to a physician.
• Determine whether the glycemic control of a diabetic patient should influence his/her dental treatment/care.
• Consider the pros and cons of chairside testing for glycemic control to decide whether HbA1C in-office point-of-service testing (new CDT code D0411) is appropriate for your practice setting.
