Abuja, Nigeria – The President of the Nigerian Dental Association (NDA), Dr. Emedom Elias, on Saturday urged Nigerians to avoid careless oral habits, stressing that the mouth is a sensitive organ requiring proper care.
Speaking to the News Agency of Nigeria during the ongoing 58th Annual General Meeting and Scientific Conference in Abuja, Elias warned against using teeth to open bottles, noting such acts can cause fractures, gum tears, and more serious oral health issues.
“The mouth is too delicate to be subjected to harmful practices. These habits must stop,” he said.
On building successful dental practices, Elias emphasized the importance of accessible dental equipment for quality care. He also highlighted the need for public awareness, regular patient visits, and continuous training for dental personnel.
“In building a thriving dental practice, it is not enough to establish a clinic. The equipment needed to do the work must be available. People need awareness and education on dental issues, and dental staff must receive regular training,” he said.
Elias identified inadequate funding as a major challenge for the profession and stressed that most clinics, including government facilities, are concentrated in urban areas, leaving rural communities underserved.
“The government can improve access by ensuring dental services are available in rural areas and integrating dentistry into primary healthcare centres,” he said.
The NDA president’s remarks came as the association convenes its conference from November 12 to 15, 2025, focusing on advancing dental care standards nationwide.
