,Q: Why do you believe it is important to proactively diagnose periodontal disease?, ,A: It is critical to be proactive when diagnosing periodontal disease to avoid the negative effects of chronic inflammatory periodontal disease on both oral and systemic health. Early detection leads to a more positive outcome., , ,Q: How do you speak to your patients about periodontal disease?, ,A: When explaining periodontal disease, I like to explain what is going on underneath their gum tissue. I explain the progression of periodontal disease as it leads to bone and tooth loss. I then explain the systemic health links, such as increased risk of heart attack, stroke, certain types of cancer, dementia, preterm labor, and low birthweight babies. I use words like bleeding, active infection, disease, consequences, and irreparable bone loss. , , ,Q: What obstacles do you face in getting patients to agree to treatment and how do you overcome them?, ,A: Without a doubt, the biggest obstacle I face getting patients to accept recommended treatment is financial. Patients tend to think that if insurance does not fully cover periodontal treatment or adjunct therapy, it must not be valuable. I explain to my patients that the treatments I prescribe are beneficial to both their oral and systemic health.
