Dental Protection introduces framework to support safer use of AI in dentistry

Dental Protection has launched the safer practice framework to help dental professionals integrate AI into clinical practice

Dental Protection has launched the safer practice framework, a tool designed to help dental professionals integrate artificial intelligence (AI) into clinical practice safely and responsibly.

The framework was developed by the dental director of Dental Protection, Raj Rattan, and is structured around two components: “informed” and “records”.

“Informed” is a real-time, process-based guide for applying AI ethically and responsibly at the point of care. It supports clinician oversight, encourages collaborative decision-making, and reduces the risk of automation bias.

While “records” focuses on documenting AI-assisted decisions. It captures clinical rationale, the role AI has played, and the final decision of the clinician — an approach aimed at ensuring transparency in audits, dentolegal matters, or legal reviews.

According to Dental Protection, the framework is designed to support clinicians as AI becomes more widely used in areas such as diagnosis, treatment planning, and patient monitoring. The organisation emphasises that while AI offers opportunities to enhance efficiency and outcomes, it also introduces potential risks that require careful management.

Dental Protection states that the AI safer practice framework is designed to provide a helpful and practical structure for integrating AI into dentistry safely.
