Medical Protection Society (MPS) has announced the appointment of Catherine Rutland to its council. Dental Protection forms a key part of MPS’s work, and Rutland will be one of the dental members of the council providing oversight of the organisation’s activities.

Rutland qualified in dentistry from the University of Leeds in 1992. After spending two and a half years in hospital-based roles, she moved into general dental practice, working first as an associate and later as a joint principal of a practice for nearly 20 years. She has also held roles at Denplan and Simplyhealth.

She is currently director of policy and clinical affairs at the Association of Dental Groups, as well as head of policy at Dentaid The Dental Charity. In addition, Rutland serves on the board of trustees of the Dentists’ Health Support Trust, supporting its work with dentists experiencing mental health and addiction challenges.

Rutland holds a master’s degree in medical ethics and law from King’s College London.

Commenting on her appointment, Rutland said: “Dental Protection and the wider MPS play an important role in supporting and protecting members globally. I am pleased to be joining the council and look forward to contributing my experience and perspective to ensure members remain central to the organisation’s work.”

Graham Stokes, chair of the MPS council, said: “I am delighted to welcome Catherine to the council. Her governance experience, together with her extensive stakeholder engagement and policy work across dentistry and the wider healthcare sector, will be of significant benefit to our members.”
