This Oct, Dentsply Sirona is encouraging the dental community to acknowledge the relationship between oral health and breast cancer care, while emphasising the importance of supporting women through innovation, education, and inclusivity.

In recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dentsply Sirona reiterates its focus on women’s health and highlights the connection between oral health and breast cancer treatment. As one of the largest manufacturers of professional dental products and technologies, Dentsply Sirona aims to raise awareness of how dental professionals can contribute to the overall well-being of patients undergoing cancer therapy.
Oral health as a component of cancer care
Research increasingly suggests that oral health has a systemic impact on overall health, particularly for women undergoing breast cancer treatment. Therapies such as chemotherapy, radiation, and hormone treatment may cause side effects including dry mouth (xerostomia), mucositis, glossodynia, and a higher risk of oral infections.
Scientific findings have also explored possible biological links between oral health and cancer development. Chronic periodontal inflammation may contribute to systemic inflammation, which is considered a factor in cancer development. Oral pathogens such as Porphyromonas gingivalis and Fusobacterium nucleatum, have been detected in breast tissue, suggesting a potential microbial connection between oral and breast health.
Dentsply Sirona highlights the role of dental professionals in early detection and prevention of oral health complications in cancer patients. The company notes that digital tools such as intraoral scanners, including its Primescan device, can support timely diagnosis and patient-centred care.
Supporting women in dentistry
According to Andrea Frohning, senior vice-president and chief human resources officer at Dentsply Sirona, the company continues to promote initiatives that support women across clinical and professional settings.
In addition to technological innovation, Dentsply Sirona supports gender equity and career development in dentistry through its global sustainability framework, “BEYOND: Taking Action for a Brighter World”. The company is a founding member of Women in DSO, an organisation that promotes mentorship and leadership opportunities for women in the Dental Support Organisation sector. Programmes such as First to 50 and She’s Prime are designed to help elevate women’s leadership and visibility within the field.
As reported in Dentsply Sirona’s 2024 Sustainability Report, the company achieved average gender pay parity across its global operations and continues to back initiatives aimed at improving access to oral health care worldwide.
Raising awareness
Throughout Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Dentsply Sirona encourages dental professionals and communities to participate in awareness efforts — through education, patient care, and advocacy. The company notes that symbolic support such as wearing pink can also serve as a gesture of solidarity with those affected by breast cancer and as a reminder of the ongoing commitment to improving women’s health.
