Edo State Governor, Mondi Okpebholo, announced Thursday at the 19th Scientific Assembly and Annual Conference of the Nigerian Association of Orthodontists (NAO) in Benin City that his state is leveraging technology and innovation to improve the quality of healthcare, particularly in orthodontics.
Okpebholo, represented by the state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Cyril Oshiomhole, stressed that the adoption of advanced technology and innovative practices are key to developing the healthcare sector.
The state plans to strengthen professional training and work closely with health associations to raise standards, standardize practices, and expand access to high-quality healthcare services.
“The challenge facing Nigerians is to ensure these innovative technologies remain accessible, affordable, and safe for the majority of people,” said Oshiomhole. “Orthodontics is more than just straightening teeth; it restores confidence, improves speech, nutrition, and overall health, and allows people to smile with dignity.”
NAO President Dr. Olayinka Adeyinka emphasized the critical role of orthodontics in correcting malocclusion, which, if left untreated, can impair functional and psychological well-being.
He also noted the vital role orthodontists play in the care and rehabilitation of children with cleft lip and palate, many of whom come from low-income families. He emphasized that timely intervention can reduce the burden of treatment for these children.
Dr. Adeyinka extended his best wishes to the new NAO President, Professor Idia Ize-Iyamu, as she takes on the leadership of the organization.
