Finding community as a female dentist

Anne O’Donnell introduces The Female Dentist – a group dedicated to helping women in dentistry advance their careers and find support.

Across practices up and down the UK and Ireland, women in dentistry are not only delivering exceptional care – they are stepping into roles as leaders, innovators, educators and mentors. And yet, despite the rising number of women entering our profession, many of us have felt isolated, underestimated, or unsure where our voice belongs at some point.

That’s why The Female Dentist exists.

We are a community created by women, for women – a space where you are recognised, supported, and celebrated. Whether you’re a student, dental nurse, practice manager, hygienist, therapist, dentist or working in the dental industry,  this is your platform to connect, grow, and lead with confidence.

Why we started

The idea was born out of lived experience. Dentistry has evolved, but the climb to leadership is still often steeper for women. Balancing motherhood with ambition, negotiating pay, navigating practice ownership, or finding the courage to push through imposter syndrome in male-dominated settings – the challenges are real, and too often faced alone.

We realised we needed more than a Facebook group or an annual event. We needed a movement. A movement that champions women at every stage of their careers. That’s what The Female Dentist has become.

What makes this community powerful is its honesty. We don’t just celebrate our clinical wins. We share openly about burnout, babies, barriers, and breakthroughs. It’s a rare space where you can be both professional and vulnerable – and still feel safe.

What we offer

The Female Dentist is more than a network – it’s a launchpad. As a member, you’ll find:

  • Mentorship and support: guidance from women who’ve been where you are – whether launching a squat practice, navigating maternity leave, or stepping into private practice
  • Exclusive events: online and in-person gatherings that are inspiring, practical, and free of judgement, focused on the issues that matter most to us
  • Professional growth: from leadership and financial confidence to clinical masterclasses, we provide tools to help you thrive on your own terms
  • A safe space: honest conversations about work-life balance, confidence, and inequality – with women who truly understand and who champion your success.

Who is this for?

This community is for you if:

  • You’ve ever felt you’re carrying too much and still being too hard on yourself
  • You’ve questioned your place at the table. We are creating our own table
  • You’re ambitious and driven – but want the support of a sisterhood that gets it.

A message from me

Dentistry is a great profession and can be very rewarding – but only if we make room for every voice. As a practice owner, mentor and mother, I’ve experienced the highs and lows. I’ve doubted myself even when everything looked ‘perfect’ on paper. But I’ve also felt the power of connection – how one conversation can change your perspective, your confidence, even your career.

The Female Dentist is that conversation. Ongoing. Real. Supportive.

We are not just building a community. We are reshaping the culture of dentistry.

Join us – because no woman in dentistry should ever feel like she’s on her own.
