First Cohort of Dental Graduates Begins 12-Month Internship to Enhance Dental Care in Hong Kong

The first cohort of 75 local dental graduates has joined the Hong Kong Department of Health for a 12-month clinical internship, marking the official launch of a new initiative aimed at strengthening clinical training and elevating dental care.

The internship program begins with a two-week comprehensive training program to familiarize the new graduates with the full scope of Hong Kong’s public dental services. This initial training will equip them with essential service standards and clinical skills, enabling them to quickly adapt to the real-world work environment.

After completing their induction training, the interns will rotate through various units, including the Department of Health, the Hospital Authority, and the Prince Philip Dental Hospital.

Under the guidance of experienced dentists, they will gain experience in key areas, including general dental services, emergency dental care, oral and maxillofacial surgery hospital services, school dental care, and community dental services for vulnerable groups.

At the launch ceremony, Director of Health Dr. Lam Man-kin said, “Clinical internship is not only an important stage for mastering technical skills and knowledge, but also a crucial step in developing problem-solving skills and enhancing patient communication skills.

Through mutual support and knowledge sharing, graduates will be able to more effectively handle complex cases and enhance overall medical standards.”

The new internship requirements are based on amendments to the Dentists Registration Ordinance (Cap. 156). The new regulations regarding provisional registration, internship, and assessment took effect on April 1 this year.

Upon successful completion of the one-year internship, graduates will receive a certificate of experience, which is a mandatory requirement for full registration as a dentist in Hong Kong.
