CLAY HANSEN, DDS

A graduate of The Ohio State University College of Dentistry, Dr. Hansen is the owner of Palouse View Dental in Moscow, ID, where he provides his patients with high quality restorative dentistry, implants, cosmetic dentistry, and family dental care. Each year, he participates in extensive postdoctoral studies led by the nation’s foremost clinicians. These continuing education courses provide some of the latest advances and most effective materials in dental technology today. Passionate about serving his community and supporting nonprofit organizations like Humanitarian Aid and Lifting Hands International, Dr. Hansen has served on teledentistry missions in Mexico and Brazil. He is involved with the American Academy of Sleep Medicine, American Academy for Oral-Systemic Health, and invited to be on the clinical advisory board for Implant Direct.

When I graduated from dental school, I promised myself I’d never do another extraction or surgery of any kind. I was afraid of them.” Not words you expect to hear from a dentist whose practice includes implant services, but that’s exactly how Clay Hansen, DDS, described the original plan for his career.

 

The change began about 2 years into practice when Dr. Hansen worked as an associate for a dentist who did everything in-house and referred very few patients to specialists. “He just expected me to do it, and he taught me how,” said Dr. Hansen. “And so I got a little more confident and comfortable. In 2005, I placed my first implant, but until around 2016, I probably placed only 5 or 6 a year.”

 

An Educational Epiphany

The big shift in Dr. Hansen’s feelings about implants—and his ultimate practice plans—occurred when he was introduced to Implant Direct’s Passport education program. “With that program, I got 2 years of as much continuing education as I wanted with one flat fee,” Dr. Hansen explained. “I went nuts with it. I renewed it.”

 

During that education immersion, Dr. Hansen, who now has a practice in Moscow, ID, developed the confidence and mindset to take a different view of his future. “I started doing more slam-dunk implants, and as I got more comfortable with those, I started doing more involved cases,” he said. “I haven’t referred an implant in over 8 years. I do them all.”

 

Simplicity Is Key

For most of Dr. Hansen’s implant journey, he’s relied on Implant Direct and their selection of implants, abutments, biomaterials, and instruments. And that includes the Simply Iconic implant. According to Dr. Hansen, the implant lives up to its name. “I like the simplicity of it—the whole workflow,” he said. “It has only 2 platform sizes [3.0 mmD and 3.4 mmD], so it simplifies my inventory. It simplifies everything from my assistant setting up the procedure to treatment planning. The instrumentation is very simple, so we don’t have a lot of different tools and pieces laying around.”

 

Dr. Hansen also appreciates that the Simply Iconic implant package includes the healing abutment. “It includes a 5-mm healing abutment, which is nice,” he said. “The 5 mm is best for most cases because it allows me to ensure the soft tissue covering the implant is at least 2 to 3 mm thick.”

 

In addition, Dr. Hansen pointed to the Simply Iconic implant’s conical connection. “That’s important because we get better long-term bone health and soft tissue,” said Dr. Hansen. “I love the conical connection. It’s got good aggressive threads, so I get really good initial stability.”
