New York Governor Kathy Hochul has unveiled a $10 million investment to expand dental care services for children through school-based health centers statewide. The initiative, announced by the New York State Department of Health, aims to increase access to preventive oral health services and improve overall dental outcomes for students, particularly in underserved communities.
The funding will help schools provide on-site dental care in areas where families often face barriers to regular treatment due to cost, transportation, or availability. Governor Hochul emphasized that delivering care in familiar settings, like schools, ensures children receive timely attention without disrupting their daily routines.
“Oral health is a critical part of a child’s overall well-being,” said State Health Commissioner James McDonald. “Early preventive care, including screenings and sealants, can prevent tooth decay and other long-term health problems.”
School-based health centers already offer free primary and preventive health services, staffed by multidisciplinary teams of nurses, doctors, dentists, hygienists, and social workers. The new funding will expand these services to include dental screenings, sealants, and basic treatments.
Dental care will be delivered through multiple formats: permanent dental offices within schools, mobile dental clinics that visit campuses, and portable setups in designated spaces. This flexibility ensures that even schools without permanent facilities can provide consistent care.
The $10 million investment will cover staffing, equipment, supplies, and services not fully reimbursed by insurance. It also aims to reduce out-of-pocket expenses for families while broadening access in underserved neighborhoods.
Over the next five years, the funding will support 33 school-based health centers across New York. Participating centers will be required to track and report on service usage and outcomes, including the number of screenings, sealants applied, and treatments performed. This accountability is designed to ensure that resources are effectively reaching the children who need them most.
By integrating dental care into schools, the state seeks to address disparities in oral health and prevent conditions that can interfere with learning, attendance, and overall quality of life. Advocates for children’s health welcomed the announcement, noting that preventive dental care is often overlooked yet plays a critical role in lifelong wellness.
