On Monday, at least 136 new doctors and dentists joined the medical and dental profession at the University of Ibadan (UI) College of Medicine.
The cohort included 111 graduates with Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) degrees and 25 with Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) degrees.
The induction ceremony, held at the Agodi Gate Civic Center in Ibadan, was organized by the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN) and witnessed by UI Vice-Chancellor Professor Kayode Adebowale, APC chief Bisi Akande, the Dean of the College Professor Temitope Ogundiran, professional elders, parents, and families of the inductees.
MDCN Registrar and CEO Dr. Fatima Kyari congratulated the new professionals while emphasizing the importance of upholding medical ethics.
She urged them to view challenges in healthcare as opportunities for growth, innovation, and contribution to the sector. Dr. Kyari highlighted the critical role of doctors as patient advocates, public health promoters, and community leaders, stressing commitment to compassionate, respectful, and integrity-driven care. She also encouraged graduates to remain in Nigeria to strengthen the country’s healthcare system.
UI Vice-Chancellor Professor Adebowale reminded graduates that medicine is a sacred trust requiring knowledge, patience, and empathy.
Quoting Sir William Osler, he said, “Good doctors treat the disease; great doctors treat the patient with the disease,” urging them to see the humanity behind every illness.
Adebowale called on graduates to serve as ambassadors of both UI and the medical profession, upholding the university’s brand with competence, empathy, and ethical practice.
He praised MDCN’s role in maintaining industry standards and thanked parents and guardians for their support, urging graduates to wear their new titles with humility and honor, recognizing the profound responsibility of safeguarding human lives.
