Jonathan Eaton Makes History as Colgate’s First Schwarzman Scholar at Tsinghua University

Jonathan Eaton, a graduate of Colgate University, has become the institution’s first recipient of the Schwarzman Scholarship, a distinguished award that fully funds master’s-level studies at Tsinghua University in Beijing. This scholarship seeks to nurture future global leaders who can address complex issues in today’s geopolitical environment. The program was founded by Stephen A. Schwarzman, CEO and co-founder of Blackstone, to provide students with an immersive experience in Chinese culture and global affairs.

Eaton, originally from Bethel, Connecticut, earned his degree at Colgate in international relations and Asian studies. Following his graduation, he began working as a pre-law fellow at Steptoe, an international law firm in Washington, D.C. In his current role, Eaton assists attorneys and clients by managing filings, monitoring regulatory changes, and supporting compliance work related to U.S. sanctions and export controls. He also participates in pro bono initiatives. Looking ahead, Eaton plans to continue his career in private legal practice and ultimately hopes to transition into a government policymaking position.

His interest in leadership and advocacy can be traced back to his time at Colgate, where he served as Student Government Association President during his senior year. During his term, Eaton and his team rewrote the student government’s constitution and campaigned successfully for the creation of a financial literacy course. Reflecting on these experiences, Eaton emphasized the importance of authentic and humble leadership. He said that a true leader helps lift others up and ensures diverse voices are heard.

The global nature of the Schwarzman scholars program particularly appealed to Eaton. With each class representing over 40 countries and nearly half of the scholars hailing from outside the United States, the program is recognized for fostering a diverse and international network. Each scholar works closely with mentors who are established leaders in various sectors, from business to international development. The program combines academic coursework on leadership, global affairs, and modern China with immersive cultural experiences, including a “Deep Dive” course offering first-hand exploration of Chinese regions and their unique perspectives.

Eaton initially applied to the scholarship in 2023 but was not selected. Undeterred, he reapplied two years later, drawing on increased professional experience and a clearer sense of his own values. He described his renewed approach to the application process as more authentic and self-reflective. Through participation in the Schwarzman program, Eaton hopes to strengthen his cross-cultural abilities, language skills, and worldview, ultimately shaping his identity as a global citizen. The Colgate Office of National Fellowships and Scholarships, which supports students in securing various fellowships, played an important role in guiding Eaton to this opportunity. Colgate’s Director of ONFS, Stephen Wright, noted the significance of this achievement and the resources made available to students through the office.
