Proper lighting is critical in dentistry. Afterall, you can’t treat what you can’t see! Here are some points to consider when choosing operatory lighting.
• Brightness: The light source should provide bright, even illumination to ensure proper visibility. LED lights offer high-intensity lighting and excellent color rendering.
• Color temperature: Dental lighting should have a color temperature in the range of 4,500 to 6,000 Kelvin (K), a range that closely mimics natural daylight and allows for accurate color perception.
• Color Rendering Index (CRI): Look for a light source with a CRI of 90 or higher to ensure accurate identification of tooth colors and tissues.
• Shadow reduction: Lighting should minimize shadows, especially in critical areas of the oral cavity. Some dental lights come with multiple LEDs or reflectors to reduce shadows and improve visibility.
• Adjustable intensity: Make sure light intensity/brightness can be increased or decreased as needed.
• Focused and uniform beam: The light source should provide a focused beam with uniform distribution, which prevents hot spots and ensures consistent lighting across the dental workspace.
• Compatibility: Ensure that lighting is easy to clean, energy efficient, and compatible with existing dental equipment.
