Materials That Impress

, ,Two new and improved materials from Henry Schein make it easy to capture accurate impressions and bite registrations with less tearing and deformation, ,When it comes to choosing the right impression materials for your practice, it’s easy to get stuck between a rock and a hard place. Finding materials that handle and perform well in a variety of clinical scenarios needs to be carefully balanced with the cost of purchasing multiple products that may or may not be needed., , ,akis sinesi, ,“These Henry Schein materials stacked up just as well as, if not better than, our current impression materials.”,– Akis Sinesi, DDS, ,“Cost is always a factor in all dental products, and particularly with impression materials,” said Akis Sinesi, DDS, a DPS evaluator who practices in Brooklyn, NY. “Less costly but quality materials are always a good thing, as impression materials that set very slowly and are too viscous can often make impressions difficult and runny, especially when taking bite registrations.”, ,Dr. Sinesi recently tried out a new and improved version of Henry Schein’s Blu-Bite HP, a bite registration material he has used in the past, and was quite “impressed” with the results. “The material handled excellently and was nice and dense. This allowed it to be used for bite registrations without the need for impression trays, which can interfere with the patient bite. It was very good at taking a full-mouth bite registration,” he said., ,Available in a fast set and super-fast set, Blu-Bite HP is a fluffy, mousse-like VPS impression material ideal for bite registration, copying transfers, and primary impressions with bite trays. “I haven’t used a popular name brand in years,” said Anthony Carroccia, DDS, MAGD, ABGD, who over the years has been successfully using Blu-Bite HP in his Clarksville, TN, practice to capture bite registrations and as a vehicle for fabricating temporary crowns and bridges., ,Dr. Carroccia also uses the recently upgraded VP Mix HP Max Hydro, a hydrophilic material with a low contact angle available in a variety of viscosities and setting times. He noted that the material is strong with less tearing and deformations. Dr. Sinesi agreed: “The impression material has excellent strength with no tearing or deformation in any of the impressions we’ve taken, and it handles quite well.”, ,Noting that he prefers the fast-setting VP Mix HP because it allows him to get the impression out of the patient’s mouth more quickly and avoid distortion or gagging, Dr. Sinesi said, “We tend to use the heavy body in conjunction with the light body for impressions using custom trays and/or trays made with putty.”, ,After using both Blu-Bite HP and VP Mix HP Max Hydro for several weeks in his practice, Dr. Sinesi is sold. “These Henry Schein materials stacked up just as well as, if not better than, our current impression materials. On top of it being a great product, we assume it will be a cost-saving measure to switch.”
