National dental spending ties record high: ADA

The national dental expenditure rose to $189 billion in 2024, increasing $7 billion from 2023, according to data from the American Dental Association’s Health Policy Institute.

After adjusting for inflation, dental spending grew 4% from 2023 to 2024. Overall health spending increased 4.6%, according to a January report from the HPI.

Dental spending accounted for 3.6% of the total health expenditure in 2024, the same percentage as 2023.

Private insurance spending increased 2.3%, out-of-pocket spending increased 3.3% and government program spending increased 9% over 2023 numbers.

National dental expenditure has grown from $107 billion in 2000. The $189 billion mark in 2024 is tied for the highest in a single year since 2000, equaling 2021 spending, the release said.
