Squamish — A new dental clinic, Chief Dental, has opened in Squamish, bringing expanded oral-care options to the rapidly growing town. Located at 107-38115 Laurelwood Rd. in the SEAandSKY subdivision, the practice began seeing patients two months ago.
Founded by longtime climber, mountain biker and dentist Dr. Jonathan Visscher and his wife, Dr. Debra Matson, Chief Dental was created to make dental care simple, comfortable and accessible. The Visschers moved to Squamish full time after years of weekend visits and running a practice in 100 Mile House.
“With the town growing, there’s obviously a need,” Visscher said, noting strong patient demand since the opening.
Visscher’s interest in dentistry started at 15 on a mission trip to Venezuela where he pulled his first tooth. He earned his Doctor of Dental Surgery from Loma Linda University in 2008 and has practised in 17 countries, often in remote settings. Those experiences shaped his approach to patient care and communication.
Chief Dental’s clinic was designed to reduce stress for anxious patients. The team considered lighting, soundproofing, scent and layout to appeal to all five senses. Floor-to-ceiling windows in the operatories frame views of the Chief, and local artwork and photography decorate the space.
The practice provides a broad range of services, including implants, root canals, extractions, restorative and cosmetic procedures such as Botox and veneers. The Visschers are in discussions with pediatric and periodontal specialists to expand on-site services so residents won’t need to travel for specialty care.
The clinic is open 10 hours a day, five days a week, with online booking, phone appointments and walk-in emergency visits. While Chief Dental does not accept direct insurance assignments, staff assist patients with paperwork; reimbursements typically arrive within a few days. The clinic also participates in the Canada Dental Care Plan for eligible patients.
Community engagement is part of the clinic’s mission. Visscher has already linked with local trail groups and plans to support cycling organizations and school programs, reflecting his background in trail building and community projects.
Chief Dental is recruiting staff as it grows. “If you’re a Certified Dental Assistant, we’d love to have you join our team,” Visscher said.
