New System Aims to Improve Dental Care for Veterans

A new pilot scheme has been launched to make it easier for military veterans in Cornwall to book dental appointments.

The initiative, part of the Veterans Regroup Project, will operate through six Armed Forces Hubs across the county. The most recent hub has been set up in Penzance, where the booking system will begin in October.

Organisers say the program is designed to improve access to essential dental care and reduce barriers for veterans, particularly those living in rural areas.

Paul Mouncher, who served 28 years in the Royal Navy and now works as the community hub and volunteer coordinator, said many veterans face challenges when adjusting to civilian life.

“When I left service, after joining as a teenager, I did not know where or who to turn to for advice and support for even the most basic things,” he explained. “Nobody explains about the waiting lists for doctors, dentists, housing, and a whole host of other issues service personnel take for granted whilst serving.”

He added that without guidance, many veterans remain unaware of the help available to them and risk becoming disengaged from daily life.

“The hubs have proved to be pivotal in bringing together the military community, support agencies, and charities,” Mouncher said. “This results in direct support without the need for lengthy signposting.”
