A new study in the September Journal of Endodontics about hospitalizations attributed to periapical abscesses.suggests that deaths from oral infections may not be as rare as once thought, and that the number of Americans hospitalized may be increasing.
Outcomes of Hospitalizations Attributed to Periapical Abscess from 2000 to 2008: A Longitudinal Trend Analysis
During this period, a total of 61,439 hospitalizations were primarily attributed to periapical abscesses. 89% of all hospitalizations occurred on an emergency/urgent basis, and a total of 66 patients died in hospitals.
