Ocho Rios Residents Reap Benefits of Free Dental Services

Residents of Ocho Rios and nearby communities in St. Ann are receiving free dental care through the Great Shape! Inc. 1000 Smiles project.

The initiative is a collaboration between the Sandals Foundation and the North East Regional Health Authority (NERHA). A team of local and international dentists and volunteers is conducting its annual community outreach in the resort town from August 11 to 29, offering essential dental services to improve smiles and oral health.

Currently, the team is in the second week of a two-week clinic at Ocho Rios High School. They will continue at the Eltham Community Centre from August 25 to 29. Services include teeth cleaning, fillings, extractions, root canal treatments, as well as free dentures and mouthguards for members of the Ocho Rios High School football team.

Now in its 23rd year, the partnership between the Sandals Foundation and Great Shape! Inc. has provided dental care to thousands of Jamaicans across the island. Beyond treating dental issues, the initiative has improved self-confidence and employability for many participants.

Speaking with JIS News at Ocho Rios High School on August 13, Dr. Maneesh Sharma, an endodontist with the project, said the outreach focuses on helping residents preserve their teeth.

“Some dental problems are left untreated for too long, which often leads to extractions,” he said. Dr. Sharma added that the work has significant, life-changing impacts on patients. In just two days, the team completed 15 root canal treatments, saving many front teeth. “For many people, this changes their lives. They feel better about themselves, and it’s very rewarding,” he said.

Dr. Michael Krawczuk, Co-Director of Great Shape! Inc. 1000 Smiles, explained that the project aims to expand its reach every year. He noted that dental care is expensive worldwide, and partnerships like this ensure that those who cannot afford treatment still receive care. He added that while most patients come for routine teeth cleaning, many require additional treatments.

Heidi Clarke, Executive Director of the Sandals Foundation, expressed gratitude to all involved. “We thank the Ministry of Health, our dental partners, and the incredible volunteers who dedicate their time,” she said. She also praised the Sandals Ocho Rios team for handling logistics, meals, transportation, and accommodation for over 70 volunteers, ensuring the services reach those who need them most.

Meanwhile, Lyndsay Isaacs, Regional Public Relations Manager at Sandals Ochi, highlighted the community impact. “We want our volunteers to experience authentic Jamaican cuisine, prepared and served by local contractors,” she said. Isaacs also noted that community members eagerly anticipate the annual outreach, often taking vacation or days off work to attend the clinics.

The Great Shape! Inc. 1000 Smiles project continues to bring brighter smiles and improved oral health to Ocho Rios, making a tangible difference in the lives of local residents.
