Tokuyama’s family of one-shade dental composites transforms the smiles—and lives—of people in need

JAY GROSSMAN, DDS
Dr. Grossman is an expert in cosmetic and comprehensive dentistry. After studying at New York University, he enlisted in the U.S. Navy and completed a tour of duty as a lieutenant in the Dental Corps, receiving the National Defense Service Medal. In 1991, he opened Concierge Dentistry in Los Angeles, CA. One year later, he founded his nonprofit Homeless Not Toothless, providing free dental care to members of underserved communities.
Keeping an inventory stocked with various shades of composites has been a challenge for Dr. Grossman during his 35 years practicing dentistry. Now, thanks to the OMNICHROMA family of single-shade composites from Tokuyama, that hassle is a thing of the past. Discover how he benefits from these materials and how they help patients in his practice as well as through his nonprofit for disadvantaged populations.

William was a homeless veteran who came into my clinic feeling mentally beaten down. When we saw him, he had a lot of anterior composite restorations that chipped and decayed over time. He asked me, “Even if I did have the courage to put myself out there and get a job, who would hire me?” Well, we just finished William’s smile makeover using Tokuyama’s OMNICHROMA products the other day, and he looked brand spanking new.
When William came for his follow-up visit, he was dressed in a button-down shirt and slacks. I said, “William, what’s going on?” He responded, “My life has changed. I have 3 job interviews this week, and when I look in the mirror, I still can’t believe it. I don’t recognize the person looking back at me anymore.” He was beaming with nonstop smiles and couldn’t express enough how grateful he was that we were able to get him out of his slump. That is exactly the reason my nonprofit organization was created.
The Impact of Giving Back
I founded the nonprofit, Homeless Not Toothless, over 30 years ago. As a veteran myself, William’s story deeply resonates with me. We have provided free dental care to more than 124,000 veterans, women of domestic abuse, foster children, and other members of underserved communities in Los Angeles at a value over $10 million. These efforts continue today.
Over the years, however, it became difficult to keep so many composite colors in stock. Then, the composite eventually expires and you have to throw it away. If it weren’t for companies like Tokuyama providing us with free materials through its social responsibility program, Tokuyama Empowers, we would not be able to make this profound difference.
Established with a similar mission to make dental care more accessible, the Tokuyama Empowers program generously donates products to help make a meaningful impact and show their support. They have been consistent with giving us composite units, and their OMNICHROMA products are remarkable.
Restoring Confidence and Smiles
OMNICHROMA’s Smart Chromatic Technology ensures universal shade matching across its available varieties: OMNICHROMA, OMNICHROMA Flow, OMNICHROMA Flow BULK, and its supplements, OMNICHROMA BLOCKER and OMNICHROMA BLOCKER Flow. They handle and adhere nicely. They look great esthetically. They hold up well in posterior and anterior restorations across every class. It’s just a phenomenal product line. Having effortless blending with any tooth color is one of the most remarkable things I have seen in dentistry in a very long time.
The patients are always so grateful, too. Receiving these high-end, beautifully esthetic OMNICHROMA composite restorations gives them the feeling that they can go out, apply for jobs, and better present themselves for interviews. They get the courage to build relationships with other people, since they are no longer embarrassed about their appearance. But beyond all that, it gives them back their confidence to smile again.
