While dentistry can be an extremely rewarding profession, its daily demands can take an enormous toll on clinicians. That’s why after more than a decade running his Acton, MA, practice, Dr. Eric Block hit a “roadblock” familiar to many dentists: occupational burnout.

“I went through a tremendous amount of anxiety, regret, and even anger towards choosing dentistry,” Dr. Block shared. Determined to reclaim his happiness, he turned to a mental health professional and began making changes that would eventually bring back the joy of dentistry.

Now, Dr. Block is glad to report that he loves going to work every day, and his brush with burnout has made him a passionate advocate for mental health and stress management in the dental community. In The Stress-Free Dentist and his 2 other books, Dr. Block shares the strategies that have helped him navigate occupational challenges and fall back in love with dentistry. “I love helping dentists reduce stress and re-energize themselves by using workflows and technology,” he said. “When you go in with a game plan, it’s so much more efficient and less stressful.”

Streamline & Save

In his experience, a one-shade composite like OMNICHROMA offers an optimal workflow as it eliminates one of the most notoriously challenging and time-consuming aspects of composite restorations. Available in universal, bulk-fill, and flowable syringes, the material is capable of matching any of the VITA classical shades with a single shade.

“I used to have a million different shades and types of composites,” Dr. Block explained, recalling the struggle of searching for the right material mid-procedure. Now, OMNICHROMA and OMNICHROMA BLOCKER are all he needs to achieve a seamless shade match for 99% of his anterior cases.

Maintaining a dialed down inventory of just a few OMNICHROMA products means less work for his team, plus significant savings for his practice. “It’s better for me and my staff—it keeps us on time and helps with material costs,” he added.

Try Something New

Another tip for beating burnout? “Whether it’s technology or a material, adding anything new to the practice is always exciting and re-energizing,” said Dr. Block. “It keeps dentistry fun.”

Lastly, never underestimate the “wow” factor. “When I tell patients that I’m using a next-generation filling material with a chameleon effect, they think that’s really cool. It shows them that I’m keeping up with the times and using the latest technology,” he said, adding that patients are even more impressed with their finished restorations. “They’ll usually say, ‘Wow, that was fast,’ or ‘This looks great!’ They’re amazed at what can be done with just one shade.”
