A long-unused barn at Poundbury, one of the few remaining original Duchy of Cornwall farm buildings, could be converted into office space.
The red-brick structure, featuring a tiled roof and open bays, has been empty since the Poundbury development began in 1993 and likely stood unused for decades before that. Historically, it was used to store agricultural machinery.
Plans submitted to Dorset Council propose adding a mezzanine floor to increase usable space, along with extensive glazing and reinforced external walls.
If approved, the commercial unit would include several private offices, toilets, storage, and two large open-plan office areas—one on the ground floor and one on the mezzanine. Access would be via large double doors on the south side of the building.
The site, located at Middle Farm Business Centre on Middle Farm Way, is near a veterinary practice and dental laboratories. The area retains the name of the original farm south of the road.
The building has been partially fenced off after youngsters were spotted playing inside.
Poundbury ward councillor Richard Biggs welcomed the proposal, saying he was pleased to see the building returned to economic use. Dorchester Town Council raised no objections.
The planning application is currently open for public comment.
