Medical Protection Society (MPS), of which Dental Protection is part, has announced the appointment of Prof Raj Rattan MBE as global adviser, a position he is due to assume in Apr 2026.

Rattan has previously served as a senior dentolegal consultant and, for the past 10 years, as dental director of Dental Protection. During this period, he has been involved in professional education, policy engagement and member support, alongside publishing textbooks and articles and delivering lectures internationally.

In his new role, Rattan will act as a senior global representative for MPS, drawing on his clinical background and ongoing clinical practice, as well as more than three decades of experience in dentolegal work and risk management. MPS stated that this role is intended to support the organisation’s focus on education, risk management and member engagement, informed by current clinical practice.

He will continue to work with medical and dental members, professional bodies and other stakeholders internationally, with the aim of supporting the development of MPS services in response to evolving clinical, regulatory and technological environments.

MPS noted that the appointment builds on Rattan’s involvement in the development of resources addressing the use of artificial intelligence in healthcare, including his role in leading the “AI Safer Practice Framework”, which was launched in Oct 2025 to provide guidance on areas such as consent, accountability and clinical record-keeping.

Commenting on the appointment, Rattan said that his experience supporting dental professionals through dentolegal and professional challenges had informed his approach to the new role, which he described as an opportunity to contribute to the organisation’s wider international work.

Graham Stokes, chair of MPS, said that Rattan’s experience and insight would continue to inform the organisation’s work and member services in his new position.

Dental Protection has confirmed that it plans to recruit a new dental director in the coming year.
