Return on investment for oral health interventions: 4 CDC stats

The CDC compiled data on return on investments from oral health interventions such as community water fluoridation, school sealant programs and medical-dental integrated care.

Here are four stats to know about the financial impact of oral health interventions:

1. Community water fluoridation can save the U.S. $6.5 billion and $32 per person each year.

2. Communities of 1,000 or more residents see an average estimated $20 return on investment for every $1 spent on water fluoridation.

3. Schools that provide sealants to students at high risk for cavities can save up to $300 million in averted costs and save $11.70 per sealed tooth over four years.

4. The U.S. healthcare system could save up to $100 million each year if dental practices screened patients for diabetes, high blood pressure and high cholesterol.
