Safeguarding your dental implants: The role advanced light-activated therapy

Dental implants are a durable solution for replacing missing teeth, but they remain vulnerable to complications such as peri-implantitis — a serious condition that causes inflammation, bone loss, and, if untreated, implant failure. To prevent the buildup of dental plaque that can lead to these issues, it is essential to practice daily brushing and flossing while also incorporating advanced oral hygiene technologies.

“Dental implants are not a ‘set it and forget it’ solution. They require the same, if not more, commitment to care as natural teeth,” said Dr Leif Björn, specialist dentist at Arvika Dental and Implant Clinic in Sweden. He added that many patients mistakenly believe implants are immune to damage, underestimating the importance of ongoing maintenance.

Dr Björn also said that routine dental visits are critical for monitoring implant health. “While brushing and flossing are essential, advanced tools and methods can enhance oral hygiene and reduce the risk of complications.”

Advanced therapies for implant health

Among the solutions recommended by Dr Leif Björn is light-activated Lumoral treatment. Developed by Finnish scientists, Lumoral is a drug-free home-use oral health device currently available in over 26 countries across Europe and Asia. This device combines light therapy with a specialised mouth rinse to clean hard-to-reach areas, reduce bacterial buildup, and promote healing around implants.*

For Dr Björn, antibacterial treatment is a “game-changer” for implant patients. “It reaches areas traditional oral hygiene methods often miss, such as deep gum pockets and the spaces between implants and natural teeth,” he said.

“By reducing bacterial load in the mouth, it prevents plaque-related oral health problems including peri-implantitis.”

Dr Björn also advises patients to incorporate antibacterial therapy into their oral care routine 2-3 times per week, alongside regular brushing and flossing. According to him, this combination creates an optimal environment around the implants, reducing infection risks and promoting the health of surrounding gums and bone.

The importance of rigorous oral hygiene

Antibacterial therapy offers advantages over conventional mouthwashes. Its antimicrobial effects last longer and penetrate deeper into bacterial biofilms, addressing areas mouthwashes cannot reach. Unlike many commonly used chemical antiseptics, the Lumoral method operates through a distinct mechanism that also reduces the risk of bacteria developing resistance.

Chlorhexidine (CHX) is a widely used antiseptic in dental care, but there is growing concern about bacterial resistance. Studies have shown that bacteria such as Klebsiella pneumoniae and Pseudomonas aeruginosa can develop resistance to CHX.* Resistance to CHX has also been linked to cross-resistance to certain antibiotics, such as colistin.*

Studies show dental implants are highly effective, with success rates exceeding 90% over 10 years.* However, their longevity depends heavily on consistent oral care. Poor hygiene can lead to plaque accumulation and peri-implant diseases, including mucositis and peri-implantitis.

While peri-implant mucositis affects nearly 50% of implant patients, it is reversible with timely care. Without intervention, it can progress to peri-implantitis, which affects 10–20% of cases and involves bone loss.*

Research added that even the most advanced electric toothbrushes remove only about 65% of plaque, leaving behind residual plaque that contributes to peri-implant diseases and other oral health issues.*

Dr Björn reminds patients that dental implant care requires a holistic approach combining rigorous daily oral hygiene, advanced cleaning methods, and regular professional checkups. By addressing all aspects of oral health, patients can safeguard their implants and enjoy lasting benefits.

“Prevention is always better than treatment,” Dr Björn said. “With the right tools and commitment, patients can reduce the risk of complications and ensure their implants remain healthy for years to come.”
