Scotchbond Universal Adhesive scoops design award

Scotchbond Universal Adhesive from 3M ESPE has been honoured with a prestigious 2012 Red Dot Design Award.

Created with ease of use in mind, the product was recognised for its flip-top vial delivery system, which allows for convenient one-handed operation.

The Red Dot Design Awards are considered one of the world’s most distinguished design competitions setting the trend for manufacturers globally. Around 1,800 companies and designers from 58 countries competed for the 2012 awards.

An international jury of design experts evaluate entries based on criteria such as degree of innovation, functionality, self-explanatory quality and ecological soundness.

At 3M ESPE we recognise that design can have a significant impact on the value of a product, said Sophie Singh, Product Manager. That’s why when we create a new product, we work in collaboration with our customers and look beyond clinical performance to elements which can influence productivity and ease of use. We are delighted that our most recent introduction to the dental adhesive range has been recognised.”

In addition to its flip-top design, Scotchbond Universal adhesive offers dentists a number of other advantages which simplify the overall dental bonding procedure. The product is a single-bottle solution that can be used in total-or self-etch modes for both direct and indirect restorations – even without additional primer.

The 3M company received a total of seven Red Dot Awards this year. Another winner within 3M’s oral care business was the Incognito™ Lite Appliance System –a low profile customised brackets lingual brace. The appliance, which sits on the underside of the teeth, is made with robotically bent wires, delivering a targeted result, designed to enhance patient comfort with a highly aesthetic solution.

3M ESPE has previously received Red Dot honours for its Elipar™ S10 LED Curing Light and Pentamix™ 3 Automatic Mixing Unit. This year’s awards reflect its continuing commitment to bringing leading-edge technology to dentistry.

(BDA) last week.

Dr Holloway, the first armed forces dentist to receive this honour since 2003, was presented with his chain of office and made his inaugural speech as BDA President at the opening of the 2012 British Dental Conference and Exhibition at the Manchester Central Convention Complex.

Dr Holloway gained his bachelor of dental surgery degree from Bristol University in 1969 and his licence in dental surgery from the Royal College of Surgeons in the same year.

After five years in general practice in the UK, he worked for the US army in Bavaria as a civilian dentist.

Three years later he joined the British Army, subsequently working in Germany, Texas, Cyprus, the Outer Hebrides and occasionally in England.

Frank achieved the rank of colonel and completed his regular army service as commandant of the Royal Army Dental Corps, commanding officer of the Defence Dental Services Training Centre and principal dental officer of the Home Counties region. He spent the last five years of his career treating new recruits and recently retired after 33 years in the army.

In 1986/87 he did an MSc in conservative dentistry at the Eastman Dental Institute London, after which he taught and ran a referral service for six years. He was then selected for command posts but maintained his clinical involvement and started a long association of activities with the BDA.

Frank has been a member of the BDA’s Armed Forces Committee since 1998 and was elected its chair in 2006, a post he had held to date.

He has also been a member of Representative Body since 2006. As with all cancers, the sooner it is identified, the better. Worryingly, only 28% of those surveyed by Simplyhealth would consider consulting or have consulted with their dentist about concerns or queries over mouth cancer. Dentists are integral to addressing any worries individuals may have about the health of their mouth. I’d encourage everyone to utilise their time in the dentist’s chair and speak up should they have any questions about the risks or symptoms of mouth cancer.’

Michael Thomas has put together the below ‘cut out and keep’ guide to the main risks and most common symptoms of mouth cancer:

The main risk factors:
· Smoking
· Alcohol
· Poor diet and nutrition
· Sun exposure (lips)
· Human papilloma virus (HPV) which affects the immune system and can be spread by kissing and bodily contact (most strains of HPV are harmless but a few are high risk)
· Previous cancer diagnosis

Most common symptoms:
· A mouth sore or ulcer that fails to heal or bleeds easily
· All red or red and white patches in the mouth that will not go away
· A lump or thickening in the mouth, tongue or throat
· Difficulty in chewing or swallowing food
· New persistent pain

1 In the last 10 years, cases have risen from around six cases per 100,000, to eight cases. The OFT also required the merger parties to find ‘upfront’ buyers for the practices.

In this case, as the parties provide NHS dental services to patients through contracts with Primary Care Trusts (PCTs), these contracts can only be assigned to new buyers with the agreement of the relevant PCT.

The parties have buyers in place for seven practices in: Taunton, North Petherton, Barnstaple (two practices), Yeovil, Chard and Aldershot. For these practices, the relevant PCTs have agreed to the assignment of contracts to the proposed buyers.

For the other four areas, in Ramsgate, Sandwich, Amesbury and Tidworth, the relevant PCTs have told the OFT they would wish to re-tender the contracts via an open tender process. Provision for this is set out in the undertakings (see note 2).

The OFT has consulted publicly on the undertakings, and also on the identity of the buyers in the relevant areas. The consultation did not provide any persuasive evidence to suggest that the undertakings would not constitute an effective remedy. Therefore, the OFT considers that the undertakings are appropriate to remedy the competition concerns identified in its decision of 10 June 2011.

Amelia Fletcher, OFT chief economist and decision maker in this case, said: ‘This remedy provides protection for NHS dentistry patients in those local areas in which we found competition concerns arising from the merger. It therefore offers a clear cut remedy to those concerns.

‘We have worked closely with the relevant PCTs in this case so that competition will be preserved and that NHS dental treatments will continue to be provided, both during the divestment process and during the interim period while any re-tender takes place.’

^1335916800^5071^Dental merger swerves competition c…^The Office of Fair Trading (OFT) will not be referring the IDH takeover of ADP to the competition commission. The OFT last month accepted und…^
Dental association CEO gets legal over ‘unfair dismissal’^

Derek Watson, former CEO of the Dental Practitioners’ Association (DPA), is taking legal action over what he claims is unfair dismissal.

Leeds-based solicitors Cohen Cramer has been instructed by Derek in his claim following the proposed transfer of DPA assets.

Earlier in the year, the DPA’s council asked the CODE management team to administer the DPA.

After taking independent legal advice on behalf of the members, Derek Watson advised the DPA’s council that the transfer was unlawful, requiring a majority vote of DPA members.

The proposed transfer went ahead and Derek was suspended for gross misconduct and subsequently dismissed despite having, he claims, an exemplary employment record.

Derek Watson said: ‘I am devastated – having worked for the DPA and its members for seven years – by council’s decision to instantly dismiss me following my advice on their legal obligations regarding the transfer of DPA assets.
