SimplyTest, a provider of salivary screening solutions, has introduced SimplyTest Oral Health-IMPLANT, a molecular test developed to identify microbial species associated with peri-implant disease and implant failure. This release extends the company’s Oral Health range, which also includes SimplyTest Oral Health-PERIO.
A 2022 review published in Cureus identified infection as the most frequent and preventable cause of dental implant failure. The IMPLANT test is designed to detect eight high-risk pathogens: Porphyromonas gingivalis (Pg), Treponema denticola (Td), Tannerella forsythia (Tf), Prevotella intermedia (Pi), Fusobacterium nucleatum (Fn), Fusobacterium animalis (Fa), Candida albicans (Ca), and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (Pa). These microorganisms are known contributors to inflammation, tissue degradation and immune response, often before clinical symptoms emerge.
“Microbial infections are a major cause of implant-related complications,” said Joel Peek, PhD, founder and scientific advisory board chair at SimplyTest. “With SimplyTest Oral Health-IMPLANT, clinicians now have a fast, non-invasive way to identify microbial risks before failure occurs.”
The IMPLANT test is suitable for chairside or at-home collection, using a proprietary saliva preservation and analysis method. Results are available within 24 to 48 hours of lab receipt, accessible through a secure clinical portal, and include pathogen-specific findings to assist with diagnosis and treatment planning.
“The SimplyTest Oral Health range is designed to support early detection and intervention,” said Justin Hunt, chief executive officer of Spectrum Health Science. “The IMPLANT test broadens the platform to include preventative implant care and surgical planning, areas of increasing relevance for clinicians and healthcare providers.”
