So Many Toothpastes, So Little Time

There is certainly no shortage of toothpastes available in today’s dental marketplace and it can be challenging to choose what’s best for your patients. Here are 5 key points to keep in mind:

Oral Health Needs: Assess patients’ oral health conditions, such as sensitive teeth or gingivitis.

Fluoride Content: For most patients, a fluoride-containing toothpaste with a concentration of 1000-1500 ppm (parts per million) is recommended. For children under 6, a lower fluoride toothpaste (500 ppm) should be used to prevent fluorosis.

ADA Approval: Look for the American Dental Association (ADA) seal of acceptance, which ensures the product has undergone rigorous testing for safety and effectiveness.

Abrasiveness: Evaluate the RDA (Relative Dentin Abrasivity) value of the toothpaste, which measures abrasiveness and its potential to wear away tooth enamel. A low RDA value minimizes enamel wear, especially for patients with sensitive teeth or thin enamel.

Allergies and Sensitivities: Be aware of certain ingredients in toothpaste, such as flavors, preservatives, or abrasives.

Remember, patient education is crucial, so take the time to explain why you are recommending a particular toothpaste and how to use it effectively as part of a daily oral hygiene routine.
