A dentist in West Miami-Dade, Florida, is under scrutiny after changing his name around the same time his Washington state dental license was suspended for infection control violations. The Florida Department of Health’s administrative complaint, filed recently, raises concerns about Sidney Moritz, formerly known as Sandy Montano, who did not notify Florida authorities of his Washington license suspension within the required 30 days.
The state’s complaint also points out that Moritz, while known as Sandy Montano, worked for Majestic Family Dental Clinic Inc. and owned the practice with his mother, Marina Montano. Florida law prohibits dentists from operating practices with owners who are not licensed dentists. According to state records, Marina Montano was not a licensed dentist and held ownership of Majestic Family Dental Clinic during the time in question.
Administrative complaints in Florida can lead to various outcomes, including dismissal or loss of license. Moritz is currently represented by legal counsel and has not issued public comments, citing the ongoing nature of the case. The records show that Moritz’s Florida dental license, acquired in late 2016, has no prior disciplinary actions. In contrast, his Washington license, issued in 2015 under the name Sandy Fletcher Montano, was suspended following multiple violations.
An investigation in Deer Park, Washington, revealed patient safety issues, improper infection control, use of equipment retrieved from the trash, and employment of an unlicensed assistant who conducted procedures requiring certification. Furthermore, Montano reportedly did not allow a state investigator to inspect his office. Washington authorities described these findings as posing an immediate danger to public safety and imposed an indefinite suspension on his license, which became final after Montano failed to attend scheduled hearings.
Montano filed for a name change in Miami-Dade two months after his last continuance request in Washington and officially became Sidney Solomon Moritz. His new name is reflected on his Florida dental license, though he continues using his former name in corporate paperwork for dental-related businesses. The Florida Department of Health asserts that by working and co-owning a dental practice with an unlicensed individual, Moritz violated state statutes, prompting this disciplinary process. The investigation and proceedings remain ongoing.
