Taranaki Children Receive Toothbrush Kits to Improve Oral Health

To improve the oral health of children in Taranaki, more than 800 children will receive dental care kits in the coming weeks.

The first batch of toothpaste kits, including a toothbrush and a tube of toothpaste, arrived at Muffle School on Monday. Approximately 30 electric toothbrushes will also be donated to the region.

Dr. Julie Martin, president of the Taranaki branch of the New Zealand Dental Association, has two main goals: to attract more dentists to the region and to promote oral health among children.

She emphasized the importance of supporting schools in raising awareness about oral hygiene. “This is a serious issue given our severe shortage of dental staff in schools,” Martin explained.

The initiative will become an annual event, aiming to reach more schools next year. A fundraising quiz raised NZ$2,000, which, with support from Colgate, will be donated to schools in Waitara, Muffle, Stratford, Eltham, and Patea.

Dr. Martin believes that instilling good habits in children now will benefit them in the future. “The Ministry for Primary Industries is lobbying for schools to ban sugary drinks,” she said. “Currently, we have some restrictions in place and encourage drinking tap water and brushing after meals.”

Taranaki also faces a shortage of dentists. Dr. Martin is committed to creating an environment where dentists can thrive in the region.

The local community of experienced dentists, including her twin sister Belinda, who runs a dental clinic in Hawera, fosters a supportive and mutually beneficial community.

“Taranaki is a great place to live. We have mountains, waves, and a vibrant lifestyle,” added Belinda Martin.

Thanks to the region’s ongoing efforts to attract young professionals, the region is about to welcome four new graduates.
