Touro College of Dental Medicine (TCDM), New Mexico’s first pre-doctoral dental program, officially opened its new 70,000-square-foot Clinical Training Center on Tuesday at the Lovelace Biomedical Research Institute (LBRI) campus in Albuquerque.
The center, with over 100 dental units, will facilitate students completing their academic and clinical training in New Mexico.
“Touro University is a leading institution in healthcare and oral health education,” said Dr. Allen Kadish, President of Touro University.
TCDM’s comprehensive training program in Albuquerque will provide high-quality dental education while offering affordable care to the community.
Our first 100 students are already serving patients in Albuquerque with a wealth of knowledge and skills.”
Because many New Mexicans cannot afford dental treatment, TCDM’s new center offers low-cost services under the guidance of dental professionals and mentors. Students will provide examinations and treatments to patients who would otherwise face long wait times or high costs.
“TCDM is committed to positively impacting the health of New Mexicans of all ages and income levels by providing high-quality, affordable dental care and cultivating highly skilled professionals for our diverse community,” said Dr. Ronnie Myers, TCDM Dean.
New Mexico has limited dental resources, with only 48.4 dentists per 100,000 residents, compared to the national average of 60.8. TCDM graduates are likely to remain in the state, thereby increasing access to dentistry.
Uninsured or underinsured residents can call 505-658-8236 to schedule an appointment. Staff members are available in English and Spanish.
The institution offers extensive academic and clinical training in general dentistry and specialty specialties, as well as continuing education for practicing dentists.
“We are committed to providing high-quality care and offering our students the best educational experience possible,” said Dr. Joseph Parkinson, Executive Vice Dean.
The $40 million project, including property acquisition and construction, is expected to generate economic benefits and create dozens of high-paying jobs in Albuquerque and beyond.
Tom Schripsema, Executive Director of the New Mexico Dental Association, welcomed the clinic’s opening and emphasized its potential to support the state’s dental workforce and diverse community.
Building on the success of its New York campus, TCDM Albuquerque offers local students access to high-quality academic support, clinical practice, and diverse population services, while also providing continuing education for dental professionals.
