 About 2 years ago, Dr. Noemi Cruz-Orcutt partnered with Whip Mix to help her transition to a digital workflow in her Mason City, IA, practice. “The learning curve was actually short because I set aside time to practice with the new software and equipment,” she said. “Also, Whip Mix’s resources and support are always there to help with troubleshooting, which has added a lot of value.”

Dr. Cruz-Orcutt pairs her intraoral scanner with 3Shape Model Maker and TRIOS Smile Design software applications, which accept STL files from any device. “It’s great because practices that have already invested in an intraoral scanner can keep using the one they have. The software doesn’t tie you to a particular scanning device,” she said.

3Shape Model Maker allows clinicians to create dental models from a patient’s scan in minutes via artificial intelligence (AI) technology. From there, TRIOS Smile Design can be used chairside to help patients visualize their treatment outcomes and take part in the design of their desired results.

“It has really improved our case acceptance compared to when I was showing them a model in an articulator,” Dr. Cruz-Orcutt explained.

With this technology, she has seen her practice efficiency skyrocket. “The old way of getting a case ready to analyze would take about 2 weeks—not to mention bubbles or scratches when pouring models,” she said. “Now, it literally takes me a half hour.”
