A speech therapist from Cambridge, UK, is pursuing damages exceeding Rs 10 crore from her dentist, alleging that a failed wisdom tooth extraction has caused irreversible harm to her career and personal well-being.
Alison Winterbotham, 55, claims her professional life was significantly disrupted following a surgical procedure performed by Dr. Arash Shahrak in November 2020. Winterbotham alleges that the extraction of her lower right wisdom tooth resulted in serious nerve damage, almost severing her lingual nerve, which is essential for tongue sensation.
In a court statement, Winterbotham described the ongoing pain as a constant burning sensation, as reported by Metro.co.uk. “My tongue is perpetually burning and tingling, causing persistent discomfort,” she said. “Each movement of my tongue, especially while speaking, exacerbates the pain due to hyper-stimulation of the nerve.”
Winterbotham revealed that this chronic pain has severely affected her ability to perform her duties as a speech therapist, a role reliant on extensive verbal communication. “I am committed to my career, but the pain forces me to limit my sessions to just two or three clients per day, as I need frequent breaks from speaking,” she explained.
