ARTHUR TOMARO, DDS
Dr. Tomaro is a recognized academician and clinician, an accomplished author, and lectures nationally and internationally on comprehensive dental health exams, diagnosis, and treatment plans; conservative esthetic dentistry and materials; smile design; evaluation, diagnosis, and restoration of worn dentition; and financial success. He received his DDS in 1980 from The University of Michigan and previously his BS and MS in biology and histology. Dr. Tomaro has completed extensive dental and other academic training and is considered an expert restorative and esthetic dentist. His extensive and comprehensive knowledge of TMJ and his ability to understand complex occlusion have prompted dentists to not only refer patients to him but also to seek him for their own personal treatment. Dr. Tomaro serves on the editorial board of national dental publications and is an independent consultant and clinical researcher for many dental manufacturers and laboratories.
Approaching his 44th year in practice, Arthur Tomaro, DDS, is doing the best dentistry of his life—with no signs of slowing down. While his expertise lies in occlusion, TMJ, and comprehensive cases like full-mouth restorations and smile makeovers, he enjoys doing his fair share of everyday dentistry, too. That said, he has a bit of advice for general dentists: Invest in CBCT imaging. Here, Dr. Tomaro shares why the PreXion Expedition is a game changer for the general practice that’s well worth the investment.

As dentists, we want to provide the very best care for our patients. So, when a patient presents with a chief complaint of discomfort, pain, or infection and you are unable to present a definitive diagnosis—often because your x-ray is limited to a 2D view—it can be frustrating for both the dentist and the patient. After all, you cannot diagnose what you do not see.
The next course of action is to refer the patient out, perhaps to an endodontist, periodontist, or oral surgeon. An appointment needs to be made for the patient, who must take time out of their busy schedule to visit an unfamiliar office and see a new dentist.
In many situations, having a CBCT unit in your general practice means that the above scenario would never have happened. With the definitive diagnosis made, treatment could have been rendered immediately in your office—no referral necessary.
Plus, the office gets the income from the CBCT.
I use my PreXion Expedition for all comprehensive exams and new patients. A rendered panoramic x-ray is generated from the CBCT, vertical bitewings are taken, and my full-mouth series is complete. I often send the CBCT to an oral radiologist to be read for a minimal cost. Now, I am confident that I have all the information needed to do a thorough examination, without being limited to 2D x-rays.
More Comprehensive Care
I recently completed a smile makeover on a patient whose tooth No. 7 had resorption. If I didn’t take a CBCT, I wouldn’t have caught it. Then, maybe 6 months down the road, I would’ve had a failure on my hands. By catching it with my comprehensive dental health exam, we were able to plan for it.
The patient was getting married in 3 months, so I restored the tooth, and about 2 months after the wedding, we took it out and placed an implant and an immediate temporary crown.
Purchasing a 3D unit is an investment, but the Expedition more than pays for itself. You will find such an uptick in your treatment plans and the amount of dentistry you can present to your patients.
The icing on the cake is the support that PreXion provides. It’s absolutely the best there is, and the team that teaches you how to use the unit is unbelievable. The support, training, and ease of learning make the entire investment a clear-cut decision.
