SONIA CHOPRA, DDS

Dr. Chopra has been practicing endodontics since 2008 and is the founder of Ballantyne Endodontics in Charlotte, NC. She earned her DDS at the University of Maryland School of Dentistry and completed a general practice residency program at Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn, NY. Her postdoctoral residency in endodontics was completed at Nova Southeastern University’s College of Dental Medicine in Fort Lauderdale, FL. She is a diplomate of the American Board of Endodontists, a member of the American Association of Endodontists, and a recipient of the Robert A. Uchin Endodontic Award for excellence in presentation.

Dr. Sonia Chopra built her career on a simple but powerful philosophy: “Give Teeth a Chance.” That motto is personal. Following a negative dental experience for a painful toothache, she received root canal treatment from an endodontist—and became pain-free. Dr. Chopra believes the procedure “shaped the trajectory” of her life. Today, as the first female board-certified endodontist in Charlotte, NC, Dr. Chopra pays it forward to her own patients using cutting-edge tools like Kerr Dental’s elements IC obturation system.

I used corded obturation systems during my residency, so when I opened my own practice, it made sense to have those same units in place. But after several years, I sensed that I needed a change. I started researching cordless systems and found that many of them used a “gun” mechanism, which required pressure to extrude the gutta-percha.

I routinely do 9 or 10 root canal treatments a day, so I was constantly pressing my hand over and over and needing to use a lot of force. I was feeling a lot of hand fatigue, and I noticed my hand was also becoming sore.

No More Hand Fatigue

All that changed once I began using elements IC. The beauty of Kerr Dental’s elements IC powered obturation system is that it’s cordless, so it can be moved from operatory to operatory. It also has a very small foot print, and it’s extremely ergonomic. I literally hold it like a pen or pencil! And there’s no more hand fatigue. With the motorized extrusion, I just press a button and I’m automatically releasing gutta-percha.

I no longer have to put all that pressure from my hand on the “gun” mechanism to extrude. I’ve tried other systems that had a similar style of operation, but the elements IC is my favorite—it just feels right in my hand.

Dense, 3D Fill—No Gaps

In my workflow, I use the warm vertical compaction technique for a more dense, 3-dimensional fi ll. Using this technique gives me the versatility to treat every type and size of canal—whether they’re skinny, wide, or curved. Since the fill is 3-dimensional, it eliminates the chance of gaps, which is not always the case when using the single cone technique.

Having the elements IC system is going to make your root canal treatments much faster, and patients will spend less time in the chair. I do a lot more 1-visit endo these days because I have such a beautiful flow with my armamentarium.

Using the elements IC during root canal treatment helps me reassure patients that we’re providing the most modern-day root canal treatment with the latest technology, and that it will be a comfortable experience.
