CURTIS BRIMLEY, DMD, MBA, MS

Dr. Brimley grew up in Cottonwood Heights, UT, and attended Brigham Young University, graduating with honors in fi nance and a minor in chemistry. He was then accepted into the Temple University School of Dentistry in Philadelphia, where he earned his DMD and MBA degrees. Following his time at Temple, he completed a 1-year general practice residency at the University of Utah. Dr. Brimley remained in the Salt Lake Valley, practicing general dentistry for 5 years before realizing his true passion was in endodontics. He was accepted into the endodontic residency program at Detroit Mercy, where he excelled both academically and clinically. After graduating in 2006, he returned to Utah to fulfill his dream of practicing endodontics. He remains deeply passionate about the fi eld and currently serves as an attending doctor in the University of Utah’s general practice residency program.

If you’ve ever thought about negotiating with insurance companies but weren’t sure where to start, you’re not alone. Like many practice owners, Dr. Curtis Brimley understood the challenges of navigating PPO credentialing and fee schedules. To overcome them, he partnered with Veritas Dental Resources, a company founded by a former DSO executive who once generated $1 million in additional annual revenue through negotiations with third-party payors. In this article, Dr. Brimley shares how working with the experts at Veritas has helped him achieve similar—and perhaps even greater—success.

I started my career as a general dentist in Utah before returning to school to specialize in endodontics. Throughout my career, one thing has remained constant—Utah has some of the lowest reimbursement rates in the country. It’s a perfect storm of insurance companies coming into the state decades ago combined with a time when Utah had one of the highest numbers of dentists per capita.

So, about 10 years ago, I started a small group with around 20 dentists. We pooled our resources and formed an independent practitioner association, which allows independent doctors to adopt a more effective advocacy approach in negotiating with insurance companies. By offering practice support and group discounts on supplies, we grew significantly.

Boost Revenue with the Experts

A key driver of that growth was our partnership with Veritas. They handled fee negotiations for the individual offices and referred other practices to our group, which helped fuel our expansion. It’s safe to say that we couldn’t have gotten where we are today without them. Now, when we approach a dentist in Utah, we can almost guarantee a 10% to 15% increase in their gross PPO collections because of the fee schedules we’ve achieved through working with Veritas. When you think about increasing dentist fees across hundreds of patients, it adds up quickly.

Collect More, Earn More

Veritas excels because they’ve already done the heavy lifting. Their team has relationships with PPOs and a 10-year history of negotiations. If you hire someone without that, you’re not going to have nearly the same success. Dentists may think they can just have their office manager handle insurance credentialing and fee negotiations, but then all they’ll get is a 1% increase. With Veritas, it’s totally different.

They onboard you quickly, and you’ll start seeing results after about 3 months, with most of your fee schedules being upgraded between 6 to 8 months. They make recommendations on which plans to drop, and they’re experts at helping you move low-paying PPOs under “umbrella networks” for higher fees—something many offices don’t realize they can do.

What Veritas does is amazing. It’s like having an expert in your office keeping track of all the insurance details you just don’t have time to stay on top of. And honestly, I was surprised at how well they did it, and at how much money I wasn’t collecting before. You can’t put a price on that.
