JACKSON, Tenn. — Emergency dental visits cause more than 34 million hours of missed school each year.
As families prepare for the new school year, back-to-school checklists often include doctor appointments, supply shopping, and sports physicals—but dental checkups are sometimes overlooked.
Experts from UnitedHealthcare emphasize the critical role of regular dental visits in preventing cavities and managing dental anxiety in children.
Cavities remain the most common chronic condition among children, affecting over half of kids aged 6 to 19. However, with proper oral hygiene, healthy eating habits, and access to dental care, most cavities are preventable.
“Choosing the healthier option can be challenging, especially with picky eaters,” said Dr. Paul McConnell. “I often recommend working with a nutritionist or dietary counselor. They can provide meal planning guidance and child-friendly recipes to support good oral health.”
Regular dental checkups not only protect teeth but also support a child’s ability to eat, speak, and learn. They also contribute to social, emotional, and physical development, helping children build confidence and maintain overall well-being.
