Raven-Symoné, the beloved star of The Cosby Show and That’s So Raven, is preparing to release a memoir detailing her journey through Hollywood, shedding light on the pressures faced by young performers.
In a recent conversation with The Shade Room, the actress candidly discussed her experiences with cosmetic procedures as a minor and how they shaped her perspective on body positivity.
“I didn’t ask for the first one, okay, and I didn’t ask for the second one,” Symoné said, referring to two breast reduction surgeries she underwent before adulthood. “I did ask for the lipo.” She clarified that while the surgeries weren’t forced, there was “manipulation at hand.”
Reflecting on the early scrutiny she faced for her body, Symoné acknowledged the challenges of growing up in an industry that often judged young women harshly. “I can sit here with a chip on my shoulder about, y’all dragged me to the Gods when I was thick back in the day and now it’s the best thing in the world,” she said. She added that her experiences highlight the importance of supporting the next generation of performers.
Her memoir will explore the complexities of being a child star, the role of those managing young actors’ careers, and the pressures of growing up in the public eye.
Symoné also opened up about her marriage to Miranda Pearman-Maday, addressing the scrutiny they face on social media. “Does it bother me when people wonder why I married that girl? Why she’s in a picture with me? Why she’s everywhere? Why she does interviews? It bothers me because it’s… disrespectful, it’s unnecessary, and it’s harmful,” she said.
She emphasized the double standard often applied to same-sex couples. “It’s disrespectful, harmful because you wouldn’t say that if we were a straight couple. If you have someone that’s working hard and putting the family together, you’re working in tandem. Would you say the same thing if she was Black? And she was getting put on and, you know, started her podcast and doing this, and I’m here helping my wife. Would you say that?”
Raven-Symoné’s upcoming memoir promises an unfiltered look at the highs and lows of growing up in Hollywood and navigating fame while staying true to oneself.
