This summer, 12 students participated in the AYF internship program in Armenia, gaining professional experience in a variety of fields across Yerevan, from the Central Bank to Wigmore Women’s and Children’s Hospital to Access to Care, a dental clinic dedicated to supporting soldiers and their families displaced by the 2020 Artsakh War.
For one participant, assisting in the internship at the dental clinic was a profoundly meaningful experience. In addition to learning sterilization protocols, operating new tools, and directly assisting in surgeries, the internship provided a rare opportunity for hands-on practice in the United States.
The experience enhanced the interns’ manual dexterity, hand-eye coordination, and deepened their passion for dentistry. Working with patients, many of whom were veterans or their families, highlighted the profound impact that even small acts of compassion can have and the vital role the diaspora plays in supporting Armenia’s future.
The cultural component of the internship was equally meaningful. Students explored Armenia’s historic monasteries, including Khor-Velap, Noravank, Geghard, and the Holy Cathedral of Etchmiadzin, deepening their connection to Armenian Christianity.
Experiences such as climbing the Pit of St. Gregory at Khor-Velap and participating in the Badalak ceremony at Etchmiadzin left a profound spiritual impression.
The adventurous weekend took everyone through the Armenian landscape—from rafting in Dilijan and staying overnight in a Hobbit-style cabin to ziplining over valleys and hiking the treacherous mountain trails to a treehouse camp. Evenings by the river and mornings filled with birdsong offered moments of tranquility and rejuvenation.
Reflecting on the program, the intern emphasized the professional development, friendships, and cultural experiences it provided: “This summer in Armenia was amazing, exciting, and transformative.
As a pre-dental student, I gained valuable skills that will guide me throughout my career. More importantly, I deepened my connection to Armenia and its people. I encourage anyone interested in exploring the beauty and cultural heritage of Armenia to participate in this life-changing program.”
This experience, made possible by the support of the Central Internship Committee, Program Director Sako, and my fellow interns, has left behind memories that will last a lifetime.
